Services
The Mental and Social Health Center provides counseling and other clinical social work services for people with mental health and neurodevelopmental disorders, as well as for people who are interested in self-improvement, but may not have a mental health condition. We approach counseling holistically, working to address practical issues while approaching in-depth psychological issues when appropriate. In addition to conventional counseling approaches, we provide families with behavioral strategies, teach social skills, do advocacy, and teach self-advocacy skills.
One of our areas of specialization is in working with clients with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We have first-hand experience dealing with the challenges of ASD, both from the perspective of parenting and from the perspective of living as a person on the autism spectrum. We also have a substantial background in working with ASD, including one of us being trained in positive behavior supports and having background in applied behavior analysis (ABA).
Mental Health Counseling for Adults
We provide counseling for adults with a range of psychological health issues, including depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and a variety of other psychiatric and neurodevelopmental issues. We use a range of approaches, based on the specifics of the situation and the nature of the challenges involved. Some of the areas we are especially knowledgeable in are mindfulness techniques, social skills, self-advocacy skills, and navigating complex life situations.
Mental Health Services for Children and Adolescents
With children and teenagers, we provide services from a holistic perspective, working to improve mental health and life outcomes through improvements to family life and the school experience, as well as focusing on individual emotional issues. We work with children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders, such as those with ASD, PTSD, depression, and anxiety. In most situations, our work is focused heavily on helping families and caregivers support the mental health and personal development of the client, as well as advocating for them when appropriate.
Advocacy
We help people of all ages, their family members, and other caregivers with developing advocacy skills, both on a coaching basis and as part of mental health counseling when appropriate. We believe that everyone benefits from advocacy skills, and that they are core life skills needed to be a healthy, successful person. We have experience with IEP plans, section 504 accommodations, and working with disabilities in the school and college settings. We are also familiar with advocacy in employment situations, and with a variety of other bureaucratic organizations.
Mindfulness Coaching and Existential Counseling
We have experience with a variety of spiritual philosophies, and mindfulness techniques, as well as knowledge of a variety of religious approaches. If you would like support with existential issues in your life that go beyond typical mental health problems, we can provide counseling in these areas. The goal is to provide ideas, insights, and techniques that work for you, and fit with your personality and worldview, as much as possible.
